1. ELISHA¹ MITCHELL was born in 1770^[99] in New York, United States^[99], died on 20 Aug. 1830^[99] in Keswick, York Co., Ontario, Canada^[126] and was buried in 1830^[101] in Keswick^[101]. He married before 1797^[100], SARAH SMITH, who was born in 1773^[100] in New York^{[54, 75, 81]}, and died about Aug. 1875^[100] in Rock Co., Minnesota, United States^[100].
Elaine Pavone's database online claims that Zebediah4 (Experience3, John2, Experience1) Mitchell (b. 1734) and Anne Bartlett married in 1754 and had children Darius, Anna, Elisha, and Avis. The present Elisha had children, among others, named Darius, Elisha, and Avis. The confluence of names seems too close to be a mere coincidence. Further research is needed on this line.^[129]
In "Rhode Island in the Colonial Wars", an Elisha Mitchell of Rhode Island is listed as having served in Capt. Jenckes' Co. in 1757, in Capt. Rose's Co. in 1758, in campaign of 1759, in Col Harris' Regt. in 1760, and in Capt. However, these appear to be a different Elisha Mitchell, since children Avis and Nelson both married in North Gwillimbury in the 1830s. Also the obituary of probable daughter Dorcas Willoughby says "Dorcas Mitchell was born near Toronto, Canada, Oct. 4, 1804. When she was two years old her parents moved to Lake Simcoe, Davidtown, Canada. Here she spent her girlhood and grew up among her nine brothers and sisters."

Elisha is listed on a number of other sites as the supposed father, but no sources are cited.^[105]

Parents of Noah seem probable, based on:
1) In the 1850 census, Noah has, living with him, Elisha Bennett age 10, born in Canada.
2) In April 1851, Noah and Sylvanus are both in the same location (Ellington, Wisconsin), with no other Mitchell families.
3) In the 1851 census, Althea Mitchel age 53 is found in North Gwillimbury Ontario, where Noah is later found in 1861. Althea is reportedly living with Avis (Mitchell) Bennett, probably her daughter, and widow of Aquilla Bennett Jr.
4) On January 24, 1863, in North Gwillimbury Twp., Elisha Bennett son of Aquilla and Avis (Mitchell) Bennett married Philinda Mitchell.
5) In the 1870 census, Sylvanus has, living with him, Althea Mitchel age 69, born in "Canada E(nglish)".

Charles and Sarah came to Ravenna, Michigan, in 1868 with Noah Mitchell.
In the 1870 Michigan census, Charles and family were living in Ada, Kent Co., Michigan.
After Charles died, Sarah married Marshall Mitchell, son of Noah Mitchell.^[96]
Charles was, according to family lore, cousin of Marshall son of Noah.^[85]
Charles W. Mitchell is probably son of Darius Mitchell the brother of Noah Mitchell, based on the following reasoning.

Nancy Pringle, age 16, is found with Charles and Sarah (“Sally”) A. Mitchell in the 1861 North Gwillimbury census, living in a log house right in between two other log houses occupied by Sarah’s mother Elenor (“Ellen”) Barry (her second marriage) and family on one side, and Noah Mitchell and family on the other side.

Nancy was daughter of George and Sophia (Mitchell) Pringle. Sophia was daughter of Darius Mitchell the brother of Noah. If Charles was son of Darius, that would make Nancy Pringle his niece. Otherwise she would be more distantly related, being a first cousin once removed, which would seem less likely for Nancy to be staying with than a closer relative.

Darius is also found in the 1861 North Gwillimbury census with children aged 17 and younger at home, and wife age 44. Charles was 19 and apparently newly married. Age 19 would be an appropriate age for the next older child of Darius, and a wife age 44 could easily have had one or more children older than 17.

Finally, the other known brothers of Darius are much less fit to be Charles’s father.
Noah was, according to Jimmie Mitchell, Charles’s uncle not his father.
Elisha Jr.’s family moved to Wisconsin not Michigan.
Nelson wasn’t known to be married until 1839, whereas Charles was born 1832 when Nelson was only 18.
Nathaniel is another even younger brother listed by some.

It is also interesting (but possibly a mere coincidence) that Charles’ middle initial was “W.” (middle name unknown), and Darius’s wife’s maiden name was Willoughby. And Charles’s son was named Nathan Henry Mitchell. Darius also had a son named Nathan (which would be Charles’s brother, if I am correct). The name Henry would have come from the Sweet side though (Sarah’s brother David Henry Sweet, for one).
